Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
