The nation's impressive new West African Art Museum (Mowaa) has found itself in the crosshairs of regional political struggles during the period it was supposed to – but failed – to begin operations to the public for the very first time.

The Major Initiative

The six-hectare campus is located in the center of the Edo state capital, main city of the southern state of Edo – and features an historical dig and structures designed by high-profile Ghanaian-British architect Sir David Adjaye, particularly noted for the Washington African American Museum that was inaugurated in Washington in 2016.

It has been half a decade in the creation – and is designed to honor both the heritage and the modern times of creativity in the area renowned for the historic artworks, historical pieces looted from the royal palace by UK forces in the nineteenth century.

Readiness and Potential

It is impressive – and ahead of the planned opening, Mowaa was energetic with employees resolved to prove it is a venue that can match renowned museums and galleries in the Europe and America.

Investment and Economic Plans

The initiative has been the concept of entrepreneur Phillip Ihenacho – presently Mowaa's managing director.

"I want us to have a significant economic impact on area populations in the vicinity," he explained to journalists, noting that he wanted to make Benin City "a tourism center."

Mowaa, a charitable national foundation, envisions itself generating in excess of 30,000 employment opportunities and contributing more than $80m annually to the area arts sector through alliances and activities.

Financial Support and Government Issues

It has needed $25m to reach this point – funds raised from different supporters, featuring the French and German governments, the UK museum and the regional authorities.

But at present the state authorities has withdrawn support from under it – terminating the use of the site on which the museum was built.

Administrative Challenges

But why has this evolved into so controversial – and such a PR disaster?

Much of it results from internecine rivalries at a local state level, as it was the ex-administrator Godwin Obaseki – whose term in office concluded the previous year – who was a major backer of the project.

And it appears the leadership of the current leader, a strong supporter of the area king, referred to as the royal figure, may want more of a stake in the project. The activists on that day, for case, were demanding that the museum be positioned under the supervision of the current Oba.

The Benin Bronzes Controversy

This emphasizes the disputed topic of the Benin Bronzes, one of the region's most famous cultural treasures.

Because though the institution does eventually begin operations, these bronzes will be noticeably missing.

They are metal, elephant tusk and wooden carvings that once adorned the monarch's home of the ancient kingdom before colonial troops looted them in the late nineteenth century during a punitive expedition.
