Senate Passes Legislation to Release Jeffrey Epstein Files

The Senate on Tuesday gave swift approval to legislation that will mandate the disclosure of investigative files related to the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a near-unanimous vote in the lower house and a shift by the president and his Republican allies. The administration relented after months of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a case that has plagued the president since his return to the White House.

Swift Approval in Congress

The Senate acted by consensus, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, expediting the process. Just before, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a 427-1 tally.

Citizens have waited long enough. The survivors have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer declared in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before urging the chamber to pass it unanimously. “Uncover the facts. Let transparency reign.”

Future Action

The measure next will be sent to Trump for his signature. Trump stated on Monday that he would sign the measure.

Even though the president has for months dismissed the uproar over the official management of the investigation as a “false narrative”, he voiced approval for the House bill over the weekend, and announced he would sign the measure if it is presented to him.

Reaction

Opposition lawmakers, along with those affected and their supporters who were watching from a viewing area, broke into applause after the bill was enacted. The only opposition came from Clay Higgins, who expressed concern he worried the measure would reveal specific data of individuals involved, potential suspects and others implicated in the investigation.
