Paris Saint-Germain Edges Olympique de Marseille in a Shootout to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now secured the prestigious trophy on 14 separate occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the match featuring the French league champions and the French Cup winners after the French winger opened the net in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille struck twice in the closing moments to seize a shock lead. Initially, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking twist of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a crucial leveler in the dying moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, stopping crucial kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored successfully for PSG to complete a 4-1 penalty victory.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the last 13 years.
