In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
