Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.
